Voice over IP

The system supports voice through the computer network. This voice system is accessed through the Communication Window (see left). The communication system supports text messages and displays system created messages.  The communications window shows the voice status of each member connected to the system. The default setting is for voice activated keying (recommended) although push to talk can be used, it does not work well.

The system is organized into "loops" as is the case at NASA. Each loop can listen and talk with loop members.

Shuttle System Loops
  • Intercom (within the space craft only)
  • CAPCOM (talks to ground)
Mission Control Loops
  • Flight Director
  • System Controllers
  • Navigation Controllers
  • CAPCOM (talks to the shuttle)

The computer must be equipped for sound and the user needs a headset and microphone compatible with the computer's sound system.
